This program is based on the successful principles of my Father, Larry Casso, Owner and Proprietor of the Baton Rouge Arts Academy, which he ran for 49 years. His school was founded on the belief that art talent is learned and earned rather than innately acquired. The primary motive behind this talent is based upon desire rather than ability. Any individual who desires to be an artist can develop this talent if they are willing to start with the basics and work toward a clearly defined goal.

This class is for students who want to get a strong foundation in the basics to enable them to progress in their art careers. The beginner student is taught the basic principles of art, which are drawing, shading, composition, and color theory, with the ultimate goal of being able to create their own original compositions in all mediums.

The primary objective of the first 8-week series (3-hour classes) is to introduce you to the basics of drawing, shading, composition, and color theory completed in charcoal and pastels. Two black and white compositions are completed. A pastel will then be done from one of the charcoal studies.

Reference materials that may be helpful for interested students include the book “How to Draw What You See” by Rudy DeReyna. Supplies included for the first session except for a drawing board (to fit 14 x 17 paper), 11 x 14 sketch pad, and Nupastel chalk (not oil) 24 color pastel set. Should you decide to continue learning additional concepts…

SECOND SESSION: Emphasizes pencil sketching and an introduction to watercolor. In pencil sketching, you will learn perspective (one and two-point) pencil techniques and how to apply this to buildings, trees, boats, and landscapes. You will also begin watercolor by doing a one-color watercolor at a small scale to teach you control and confidence.

THIRD SESSION: This course advances you to two-color, three-color, and four-color watercolor at a larger scale in a step-by-step process that continues to build upon the foundation you have already established.

FOURTH SESSION: Advances you further in the techniques of watercolor. The subject matter is likewise more complicated. You will be furnished with study aids and will explore a larger palette in various step-by-step instructions. Teaches detailed smaller paintings as well as loose wet on wet painting, concepts that can be applied to other mediums.

The primary objective of the entire program is to give you the ability to intelligently do a painting from start to finish after completing the four sessions. After this, you can easily transition into acrylics, oils, portraits, or any other direction at an advanced level. This program is meant to give you the foundation and assistance necessary to pursue your own goals.
