Soon in our liturgical year we will arrive once again at All Souls' Day. In the general introduction of the Order of Christian Funerals, we read, "At the death of a Christian whose life of faith was begun in the waters of baptism and strengthened at the eucharistic table, the church intercedes on behalf of the deceased because of its confident belief that death is not the end nor does it breach the bonds forged in life."

All of us keep deep in our hearts the memory of a loved one who has died. That memory is precious and sacred. On All Souls' Day and throughout the month of November, we at Saint Joseph Abbey continue an ancient monastic custom to remember and intercede for loved ones who, in the words of the Eucharistic prayer, "have gone before us marked with the sign of faith." I invite you to join us in this custom by sending us the names of your loved ones who have died. We will keep their names in our Abbey church and we will join you in praying for them throughout the month of November.

May our merciful Lord, who promised to wipe away every tear, bless and console you and your family and give eternal life to your departed loved ones.

In the Peace of Christ,
Abbot Justin Brown, O.S.B.
