Brother Joseph Leroy Webre, O.S.B., monk of Saint Joseph Abbey in Saint Benedict, La., died at Saint Joseph Abbey on Monday morning, 24 September 2012. He was 72 years old.

Son of the late Charles Webre and Inez Tassin Webre, Br. Joseph was born in New Orleans, La. on 18 May 1940. He made his profession as a Benedictine monk of Saint Joseph Abbey on 29 August 1960. He is survived by his siblings Fred Webre, Emory Webre, Judith Webre Livaudais, and Donald Webre.

Throughout his 52 years as a monk, Br. Joseph served his fellow monks in numerous positions in the monastery dairy, kitchen, grounds and maintenance departments, and on the monastery farm. He will be best remembered for his 18 years of service in the Pennies for Bread and the Abbey Program where he literally helped to feed the Lord's sheep in the poor and homeless of the New Orleans region.

Br. Joseph's body was received on Tuesday, 25 September 2012 at 5:30 p.m. at Saint Joseph Abbey followed by the singing of Vespers. Later that evening, at 7:15 p.m., a funeral vigil was held in the Abbey Church.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, 26 September 2012 at 11:15 a.m. at Saint Joseph Abbey followed by burial in the Abbey Cemetery.
