THE SAINT BENEDICT APPEAL FOR HEALTH AND EDUCATION
Each year at this time of the Feast of Saint Benedict, we send an appeal to you, our friends, for help to meet the costs of caring for our infirm monks and for educating our younger monks. Each year our needs in those areas continue, so again we write requesting your support.
This past year we wrote about Fr. Charles Benoit who was completing his Licentiate in Canon Law at The Catholic University of America. We are happy to have him home again following his graduation in May. He is now serving as Subprior of the community and assisting in the Metropolitan Tribunal in New Orleans.
We also wrote at that time about Fr. Cyril Crawford who was pursuing his doctorate in philosophy at the Catholic University in Louvain. But our plans are often not God's plans. As many of you know already, Fr. Cyril died suddenly, and last month we celebrated his Funeral Mass and burial here. With sad hearts, we said, "God's will be done."
Life goes on, and community life here at the monastery moves on. The education of our young monks continues to be a priority for us as we look to the future of the community and, especially, to that of the Seminary College. We are grateful that we have two monks, Br. Ephrem and Br. Elias, who are continuing their studies. Br. Ephrem is presently writing a Doctoral Dissertation in Spirituality while Br. Elias is pursuing a distance learning Masters Degree in Theology from Saint John's University, Collegeville, Minnesota.
Even as we work to support these monks, we never forget those who have spent years in community, serving in so many ways, but who now, because of age or illness, need care themselves. We have been blessed, through your assistance, to have them still living in community and sharing their gifts in new ways.
As we celebrate Saint Benedict's feast on 11 July, each of you will have a special remembrance in our Eucharist and Divine Office. May God grant you blessings in the same generous measure with which you continue to bless us.
In the Peace of Christ,
Abbot Justin Brown, O.S.B.
